Introductory Information

The United Nations is an international organization of almost all countries in the world that have vowed to promote world peace and cooperation between countries. This association works to assemble countries of all sizes, levels of wealth, stages in development, and political systems. The main goal of the United Nations is to improve economic and social problems, leading to improved lives, and eventually to ultimate world peace. The UN is a place for countries to meet and discuss international concerns and work through problems, it is not an international government and has no power to create laws.

All member countries assure that they will peacefully work through all disagreements and refuse to aid any nation that goes against the work of the UN. This membership is open to any country that has the willingness to advance the work of the United Nations and follow all of the rules set aside to safeguard the organization and its member countries.

As of 2004 there were 191 member nations, and each received an equal vote and voice regardless of individual power. Each of these members is also taxed at a rate determined by the countries Gross National Product (GNP).

The United Nations has been faced with great adversary over the years, but it did begin to grow in power in the early 1990s, and was soon awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. One of the main problems that the United Nations faces is the reluctance of many nations to relinquish power and follow the mandates set aside by the United Nations. It is very difficult to convince countries that by acting in everyone’s best interest they are helping their own country just by gaining international recognition and friendships. In order to relieve tensions among citizens, and between countries, the UN had nearly 60,000 peacekeeping troops stationed in 100 countries as of 2004.
